Session Outline

 Learning Objectives

  • Explore the challenges of telehealth for the doctor when approaching psychological and emotional issues.

  • Identify challenges of telehealth for patients when presenting with psychological and emotional issues.

  • Managing silence in a telehealth consultation.  

  • Explore ways of managing uncertainty when face-to-face is not possible.

Pre-session activity There is reflective task is to complete prior to this session.

Activity 1 Discussion (10 mins)

  • Is telehealth suitable for emotional and psychological consultations? 

Activity 2 Case discussions (10 mins)

  • Participants share their own cases in pairs.

Activity 3 Case study A group discussion (25 mins)

  • What do I do with silence over the phone? 

  • How do I manage someone crying? Weeping? Suicidal? 

  • How is comforting a patient on telehealth different to face-to-face? What would patients prefer?

  • How do I manage uncertainty for myself and my patients when they are not in the room?  

Activity 4 Wrap up (10 mins )

  • Identify one thing I will keep doing. 

  • Identify one thing I might change.
